Florida Car Titles: Common Questions

Are you going to be buying or selling a vehicle in Florida? If so, you might have some questions about titles, what they mean, and why they are important. Here are some answers to questions that are frequently asked regarding Florida car titles. They should help to give you a better understanding of what you need. You can also talk with the DMV or a DMV alternative based in South Florida to learn more.

What Is a Car Title?

The title is the documentation that shows the name of the owner of the vehicle. It will also include the type of title the vehicle has, and information about the vehicle. Some of the different types of titles that could be assigned to a car include clean titles, clear titles, salvage, and rebuilt. Having this information displayed on the title ensures that people know and understand exactly what it is they are buying.

Can You Drive Without a Title?

The only way to get your car registered and legal for the road is if you have a car title. Without it, you can’t use the vehicle on the road. Make sure that you get a title as soon as you get your car, so you can take care of the rest of the paperwork.

When Do You Need to Get a Title?

If you are going to buy a new vehicle and you are buying it outright without the use of a lender/lienholder, you will need to apply for a title in your name. When you buy a vehicle and you have a lienholder, the title will be in their name, but your name will also appear on the title. If you are buying a used vehicle from a private seller or a used car dealer, and you don’t have a lienholder, the title needs to be transferred to you.

Do You Need a Title for All Vehicles?

Most of the time, you will need to have a title for your vehicle. There are some types of vehicles that will not require a title, though. If the vehicle weighs less than 2,000 lbs. you don’t need to have a title. This would mean that things like scooters, mopeds, and motorized bicycles will not need to have a title. Of course, laws could eventually change, so you will want to check with the DMV or DMV alternative based in South Florida.

How Much Does a Title Cost?

The answer to this question varies, but you’ll find that the cost of a title tends to be affordable. The price of electronic titles is noted below. The cost of paper titles is a bit more. You will want to add $2.50 to each of the below numbers to get the accurate price. This extra fee is for service and handling.

  • Original Title - $77.25

  • Original Used - $85.25

  • Transfer/Duplicate Title - $75.25

  • Lien Only (No Transfer of Ownership) - $74.25
